Richard Garriott invented and reinvented the computer RPG genre after every new title of the Ultima series. Playing the whole series is like studying the very history of CRPGs. All games were very popular back in the days, and that's probably why the series went on forever.

This is a remake of the original Ultima released in 1981 for the Apple II, arguably the first CRPG ever released! The graphics and gameplay are quite dated for today's standards, but it's still worth the exerience. In most aspects the game is weak, but then again, it was originally released more than two decades ago, only two years after Space Invaders first hit the arcade machines in Japan. It was VERY innovative and advanced for its time.

Sosaria suffers greatly with the rise of Mondain, who appears to be immortal and all-powerful now, thanks to a magical gem he created himself. You need to find a way to travel back in time and prevent him from creating the gem before all is lost! Cliched you say? Think again, it was the *first* CRPG ever. No one ever did anything like it before.

Even if very simple, the PC version of Ultima I came out with improved graphics compared to the PC versions of Ultima II and III. You might even say Ultima I is a lot more appealing than its successors: it looks a lot like Ultima IV indeed.
